About the Retreat:

MEDITATING IN THE DESERT: The Arizona desert is a magical place, offering a temperate respite in midwinter for this backpacking retreat. Mild temperatures offer pleasant outside practice and walking conditions. The Superstition Wilderness is a vast expanse of silence and wonder with deep canyons, dramatic mesas and towers, and lush riparian creeks.

We will be walking on and off trail on easy terrain through the backcountry. There will be a mix of backpacking days, where we will travel 2 - 6 miles, and layover days, where we will follow a more conventional sitting-and-walking schedule in incomparable settings. There will also be an optional solo time near the end of our retreat.

This trip will be held in Noble Silence and will require a commitment by participants to this practice. While emphasizing the opportunity to turn inwards, there will also be times for dharma talks, group check-ins, and interviews with the teacher. In this retreat, the mystery that surrounds us will become palpably close. Assuredly it will allow opportunities for surprise, delight, and challenge.

The retreat begins and ends in Phoenix, Arizona, with convenient air access. Carpool information will be provided, and transportation for those coming from the airport will be coordinated. The retreat is limited to 12 participants and a commitment and deposit is required to hold your place.

About the Retreat:
Seeing things as they are (yattha bhutam) is an essential practice on the path of awakening. "Where there is perception, there is deception," the Buddha taught, emphasizing that most of our suffering comes from wrong perceptions. We will examine the stabilizing, clarifying practices of Right View and Right Thinking. We will also delve into the practice of telling the truth as constructively and skillfully as possible, incorporating the practices of Right Speech and upaya paramita.

Silence, walking meditation, mindful meals, Dharma discussion, yoga, and talks by and personal interviews with the teacher are intended to provide conditions favorable for the practices of knowing the mind and telling the truth taking root in each participant.

The retreat, held mostly in silence and including more meditation practice than in previous retreats with Therese, is recommended for both beginning and experienced meditators.

There will be time to enjoy the peaceful grounds, Aravaipa Creek and hiking trails by Aravaipa State Park. Vegetarian meals with gluten-free options, indoor bedrooms and tenting are available. Check-in 3:30-5:00pm Thursday. Retreat ends after lunch on Sunday.

This is an annual retreat whose sponsorship and management is alternated between Singing Bird Sangha in Tucson and Desert Cactus Sangha in Phoenix.
